Goals

  • Reduce children’s risk factors for potential substance abuse, delinquency, teenage pregnancy, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, school dropout and poor life adjustment.

  • Improve protective factors such as coping skills, communication skills, social skills and academic skills in children by creating a harmonious and healthy family environment.

  • Increase parents knowledge of appropriate child-rearing, supervision, relationship skills and developmental expectations.

  • Reduce parents’ potential for substance-abuse relapse.

Mechanics of Program
SFP consists of 14 sessions over a seven-week period. Sessions are held twice a week for two hours. Parents meet for one hour to learn parenting skills and children meet in a separate group to learn life and social skills. Parents and children then practice what they have learned for one hour in the family session. Instructors are available to coach parents and children on appropriate interaction skills.
