Strengthening Families
Program
The Strengthening Families
Program (SFP) is unique because it addresses the family
as a whole rather than focusing solely on the parents or
the children. This program is designed specifically to assist
children of substance abusers as well as those who are living
in environments where they are at risk for abuse.
History
-
SFP was developed in response to requests from drug-abusing
parents in treatment.
-
A study of drug abusers and alcoholics revealed that
they spent little time with their children.
-
Development of the program resulted from a three-year
prevention research project funded by the National Institute
on Drug Abuse in 1983.
-
Dr. Karol Kumpfer, Ph.D. and Dr. Joseph DeMarsh,
Ph.D. designed the curriculum and national consultants and
local psychologists assisted with program development.
